Use the four accuracy checks in Bosch's GCL 2-15 manual before a layout job or after a knock. They check horizontal-line height, horizontal-line level, vertical-line level and plumb points separately. The 2023 Bosch manual gives a 3 mm maximum mark separation for each specified 5 m horizontal test, 1.2 mm for its example 2 m doorway and 7 mm for its example 5 m floor-to-ceiling plumb test. These are different setups, not one universal tolerance. Bosch GCL 2-15 manual, English pages 21–23.
This page covers the red-beam Bosch Professional GCL 2-15, article family 3 601 K66 E.., including the UK GCL 2-15 0 601 066 E00 variant. The Bosch manual also lists GCL 2-15 G, but do not transfer these steps to a differently named Bosch model without checking its own manual. If your label differs, find the manual by the article number on the tool.
Print the line-check sheet and print the plumb-point sheet. Each has spaces for your date, tool serial number, distances, marks and result. The sheets are records of a user's check; they are not a calibration certificate.
What should you set up before checking?
Use firm ground and a stable surface or tripod where the particular check permits one. Select automatic levelling, not pendulum-lock mode, and let the tool settle before each mark. Mark the centre of each laser line or point because its visible width changes with distance. Bosch advises checking levelling accuracy before work and after severe external influences. The manual warns that large temperature changes can affect accuracy; allow the tool to adjust to ambient temperature first. Keep the beam away from people and animals and do not stare into it. The tests below paraphrase the manual's sequence. Keep the Bosch diagrams on PDF pages 21–23 beside the print sheet; the marks labelled I, II, III and IV refer to those diagrams.
How do you check horizontal-line height accuracy?
Use two walls 5 m apart. At this specified distance, marks I and III on wall A must be no more than 3 mm apart. Bosch's limit is 2 × 5 m × 0.3 mm/m = 3 mm. Bosch manual, English pages 21–22.
- Set the GCL 2-15 near wall A on a tripod or firm level surface. Select cross-line mode with automatic levelling. After it settles, mark the crossing centre on wall A as I.
- Rotate the tool 180° in place. After it settles, mark the crossing centre on wall B as II.
- Move the tool close to wall B without rotating it. Let it settle and adjust its height until the crossing centre falls exactly on II.
- Rotate the tool 180° without changing its height. Aim at wall A so the vertical line runs through I. After it settles, mark the new crossing centre on wall A as III.
- Measure the separation between I and III on wall A and record it. At 5 m wall spacing, compare it with 3 mm.
How do you check horizontal-line level accuracy?
This is a different 5 × 5 m setup, again with a 3 mm maximum separation between the final two marks on wall A. Use horizontal-line mode with automatic levelling. Bosch manual, English page 22.
- Place the tool midway between walls A and B on a tripod or firm level surface. With each wall 2.5 m from the tool, mark the line centre on wall A as I and on wall B as II.
- Move the tool 5 m parallel to the walls, keeping it midway between A and B, and rotate it 180° from its first orientation. Let it settle. Adjust its height so the line centre hits II on wall B. Follow Bosch's page 22 diagram for the placement.
- Mark the line centre on wall A as III. Measure the separation between I and III. In this specified layout, it must be no more than 3 mm.
Do not substitute the first horizontal test for this one: Bosch specifies both height and level checks. The line-check sheet gives each its own result field.
How do you check the vertical line?
Use a doorway with firm ground and at least 2.5 m of clear space on either side. The limit depends on the doorway height: 2 × doorway height in metres × 0.3 mm/m. For Bosch's 2 m example, marks III and IV may be no more than 1.2 mm apart. Bosch manual, English pages 22–23.
- Put the tool on a firm flat surface, not a tripod, 2.5 m from the doorway. Select vertical-line mode with automatic levelling and aim through the opening.
- Mark the line centre on the floor of the doorway as I, then 2.5 m beyond the doorway as II (5 m from the original tool position). Mark the line centre at the upper doorway edge as III.
- Rotate the tool 180° and place it on the far side directly behind II. After levelling, aim so its vertical-line centre passes exactly through I and II.
- Mark the line centre at the upper doorway edge as IV. Measure the doorway height and the separation between III and IV. Calculate the limit from the actual doorway height before deciding the result.
How do you check the plumb points?
For a 5 m floor-to-ceiling distance, Bosch allows up to 7 mm separation between the two ceiling marks. The general calculation is 2 × floor-to-ceiling distance in metres × 0.7 mm/m. This uses the point accuracy figure, not the 0.3 mm/m line figure. Bosch manual, English page 23.
- Use a clear space on firm ground with approximately 5 m between floor and ceiling. Fit the tool to its RM 1 rotating mount, put it on the floor, select point mode and let it level.
- Mark the upper point's centre on the ceiling as I and the lower point's centre on the floor as II.
- Turn the tool 180°. Position it so the lower point's centre falls on II, let it level and mark the upper point's centre on the ceiling as III.
- Measure I to III on the ceiling. Calculate the limit from your actual floor-to-ceiling distance and record both values on the plumb-point sheet.
What if a mark exceeds the limit?
Repeat the setup once, checking that the surface did not move, the tool had self-levelled and each mark used the beam centre. If a check still exceeds Bosch's maximum deviation, Bosch directs you to its after-sales service for repair. These procedures check accuracy; the manual does not give an owner adjustment sequence. We reviewed Bosch Professional's GCL 2-15/GCL 2-15 G instruction manual 1 609 92A 8E9 (20 March 2023) and the Bosch UK GCL 2-15 listing on 4 October 2026. The test geometry and maximum mark separations come from the manual's English pages 21–23. We have not operated this laser or independently measured its accuracy. The sheets preserve the maker's four separate checks and leave the observed values blank for the user. If Bosch revises the manual for your exact article number, use the manual supplied for that tool.
