What To Look For In The Best Laser Level Tool (Our Buying Guide)

Looking for the best laser level tool is not always an easy job, some of these handy tools have varying features and come in different types, making your search time-consuming.

We have put together an informative buying guide below which will cover the types of laser levels out there, what you can use them for, which features to look for in your model and how to use these laser level tools.

Types Of Laser Levels

When choosing your laser level you need to make sure you familiarise yourself with different types that are on the market, there are three main types of laser levels which will discuss in more detail below.

Rotary Laser Levels

Rotary laser levels are best for construction projects where you might be setting a foundation level to the walls, they operate in 360-degrees which is perfect for giving plane measurements and helping you plan slopes.

The visible level laser line from this model is typically the best out of other laser levels.

These models are the most expensive however and are only really needed for construction professionals, not the average DIY’er, they can also be very delicate depending on the model that you buy.

Dot Laser Levels

On construction sites when setting up walls you have to make sure that they are level, but also plumb which means straight up and down, this can be done with dot laser levels.

These levels are extremely accurate compared to spirit levels for these jobs and are commonly used to measure projects such as light switches or lining up walls as we mentioned.

Line Laser Levels

These laser levels are similar to the models that we reviewed above and use horizontal plus vertical lines for measuring surfaces on a 180-degree pivot, they can go up to 360-degrees too.

They are perfect for projects that need a constant level of measurement such as putting up railings but are quite delicate because of their pendulum systems inside.

Top Features To Consider In a Laser Level

Laser levels can seem a little complicated at first glance, with some having a Bluetooth app and others having a 360-degree range, you need to make sure you understand which features you need in your device and how they work.

We have listed the essential features to watch out for in your laser level below.

  • The range – Range is important on your laser level as it determined how far your laser will go, this typically is around 30-60m and can often be extended with a receiver for an even larger range.
  • Accuracy – The accuracy of your laser level is very important, it should be at least ±3mm, lasers that can self-level and correct themselves are even more accurate which we will discuss later. You should also check the accuracy of your line points if you have this type of laser.
  • Beam orientation – It is important to check the beam orientation of your model, some can be used twice vertical and once horizontal translating to three beams and others have 360-degree coverage which is excellent for measuring a whole room quickly.
  • Red or green – When buying a laser level you will likely notice some of the upper-end models use a green beam while others use a red coloured beam. Red laser models are said to be less visible than green models and are often cheaper, green lasers are brighter and more expensive.
  • Self-levelling – As we mentioned above, having self-levelling on your laser level is very important for getting the best accuracy out of your model. This works by placing the device on a level surface and the levelling system inside achieves the final level of accuracy.
  • Mounting – Having mounts on your laser level is important as it allows you to use the level hands-free. The best laser levels will have a huge variety of mounting points for different tripods and metal surfaces.
  • Bluetooth – Higher quality laser levels will have Bluetooth connections with an app that allows you to adjust the laser level from a distance. Some even have a pulse mode which allows you to adjust the laser brightness for better visibility.
  • Battery life – An impressive battery life is important on a laser level as it stops interruptions, also check the batteries it takes, some have a dual battery system that allows you to use AAs or a rechargeable lithium battery.
  • Durability – Since laser levels have a pendulum inside this makes them more delicate, most should have a protective cover, some waterproofing and be made with high-quality material.
  • Warranty – Always make sure that your laser level has a one-year warranty for buyers confidence and to protect you against any faulty models.

Using a Laser Level To Level Ground

  • Step one – Set your tripod with your laser level on the stable ground then turn it on and allow it to self-level itself.
  • Step two – Choose a point in the ground at the height you want then attach the laser detector to a measuring rod and place it at this point.
  • Step three – Adjust it up and down then when you hear beeping you have found the right level.
  • Step four – Tighten the detector to your pole then the bottom of your rod will be your desired ground height.
  • Step five – Find another spot on the ground where the detector intercepts the laser and mark the height by making a line on the stick.
  • Step six – Keep going until you have enough reference points.

Using a Laser Level To Hang Pictures

  • Step one – Determine the height for the top of your picture frame and mark it at the desired height.
  • Step two – Turn the laser level on and line up the laser with the mark horizontally.
  • Step three – Get the bubble to sit into the black lines and pivot around the point.
  • Step four – When the laser becomes level and runs through the mark you can attach it to the wall.
  • Step five – Measure the distance between the top of the frame and the laser level.
  • Step six – Make a mark then punch a nail into the mark, place the frame on top then match with the laser.

Using a Laser Level Outdoors

  • Step one – Put on your tinted goggles so as you will be able to see the laser beam outside.
  • Step two – Place the laser level on a tripod then aim it where you want to take measurements and lock the laser into position.
  • Step three – Move the receiver where you want to take a reading and move the magnet that comes with a receiver on a flat surface
  • Step four – Move the receiver until it catches the receiver beam and locks the receiver into position.
  • Step five – Use the level and the receiver to find the state of the level you want.

Using a Laser Level To Set Grade

  • Step one – First set up the laser level on firm dry ground and make sure that the tripod is stable. Turn the level on and allow it to self-level.
  • Step two – Identify the height of your grade and it will slope down from here and place the bottom of the levelling rod at the desired height.
  • Step three – Adjust your laser detector up and down until you hear a beep then secure the detector and identify the falling size you want from the top of the grade to the bottom.
  • Step four – Take the detector up 10-inches and secure it then walk to the bottom of where the grade will be. Find the right measure with the detector then dig into the ground.
  • Step five – The levelling rod stays at the bottom of the grade and mark the spot by putting a stick in the ground at the height you want.
