How To Measure Floor Level With Laser?

Last Updated On December 6, 2021 By Elliot

Measuring floor level with laser is easy; you just need to set up your laser range finder at a distance from the surface. The only problem with this method is that it requires a lot of space to set up your laser device.

For flat surface flooring level laser can measure it with ease, but for uneven surfaces like stairs or ramps, measuring them becomes difficult and time consuming.

In such cases, there are other methods which will help in determining the exact height of any object on the ground. These include using an inclinometer, tape measures, etc.

But these methods require more effort than setting up a laser range finder. So if you want to know how to measure floor level with laser range finder then read further.

How to measure if your floor is sloping, level or sagging?

To determine if your floor is sloped, level or sagging, you need to use a laser level. This tool is a must for construction projects.

It can help you calculate the accurate angle of elevation, The laser detector will be placed perpendicular to the slope. It will emit a beam of light towards the target area.

If the floor is perfectly horizontal, the emitted beam should hit directly onto the center point of the target. But when the floor slopes, the beam will not reach its destination.

Instead, it will reflect off the wall and come back to the sensor. In case of a steep slope, the reflected beam may even go beyond the edge of the sensor.

Here some steps to follow :

Step 1. Set up your laser range finder at a suitable distance away from the floor. You can place it anywhere near the middle of the room where you plan to install the new floor.

Step 2. Place the LRF so that it’s perpendicular to the slope. Make sure that the sensor is facing downwards.

Step 3. Turn on the LRF and wait until it emits a green dot. If the dot appears right above the center of the target, then the floor is perfectly horizontal.

Step 4. Now move the LRF slowly along the length of the floor. When the dot starts moving down, it means that the floor has started tilting downward.

Step 5. Once the dot reaches the bottom of the screen, stop moving the LRF. Then take note of the number displayed on the display unit.

Laser tape measure and measuring tape can also help you figure out whether the floor is sloping or not.

The laser tape measure works by emitting a red laser beam across the entire width of the tape. As soon as the beam hits something solid, it reflects back to the sensor.

This reflection causes the sensor to count one pulse every second. By counting pulses over a period of time, we get the total distance covered by the laser beam.

Measure floor slope using a clinometer

Clinometers are used to measure slopes in many different industries. They range in price from $50-$500 depending on features and complexity.

There are many online calculators that can be used to find your floor slope. in UK many companies provide free tools to their customers.

You just have to enter the dimensions of your room and select the type of floor and click “calculate” button.

Once done, you will receive the results showing the degree of slope.

Using this method, you don't need to buy expensive equipment. All you need is a ruler and a protractor.

How are laser levels calibrated?

Laser levels are calibrated using a series of precision tools called calipers. Calibrated levels are used to ensure accuracy and consistency when transferring measurements from one level to another.

If the level is not calibrated correctly, measurements could be off by thousands of an inch. This would result in inaccurate calculations for building projects like framing walls.

Calibration involves taking several readings from each side of the level's bubble window. These readings must fall within 0.001 inches of each other before they're considered valid.

In addition, calibration requires checking the level against known standards such as plumb bobs, spirit levels, and steel plates.

What are the other types of laser level that you can use in any carpentry project?

Using laser level for outdoor project and indoor construction projects is a great idea because they don’t have to worry about dust particles getting into their sensors. They work well under all weather conditions.
